Ay Tee Em bounces back
GOORNONG pacer Ay Tee Em remains part of the Australasian Breeders Crown after winning one of three repechages for the two-year-old fillies at Geelong yesterday. The Peter Salathiel-trained speedster bounced back from her defeat to Sterita in her heat, with an all-the-way win as a $1.30 chance in the first of the repechages. On the line the daughter of Mach Three had a neck to spare over Keppel Bay, with Keayang Princess back in third spot.A top-three finish was what was required to guarantee the fillies a place in one of the two $20,000 semi-finals to be run at Bendigo on August 9.Joining Ay Tee Em, Keppel Bay and Keayang Princess in the semis will be Miss Athens, Life Inthefastlane, Broadways Best, Dreams Of Heaven, Keepers Daughter and Bettor By Far.Miss Athens might have gone around at $38, but the Warren Bird-trained filly was too good for favoured pair Life Inthefastlane and Broadways Best in the second qualifier.Bendigo pacer Dreams Of Heaven, trained by Larry Eastman, strolled home by almost 18 metres from Keepers Daughter and Bettor By Far in the final fillies repechage. The final two-year-old colts and geldings semi final spots were also decided at Geelong. As few as eight places were up for grabs, meaning only the first two home from the repechages, along with the two best-performed third placegetters, would progress.Royal Surprise and Mad Macca ran one-two in the opening repechage.Kid Coconut and Our Archangel filled the top two spots in the second event, while Franco Newsman defeated Emm Harvey in repechage three.Wreck Tangles, third placegetter in the second qualifier, will progress ahead of the other third placegetters Rockys Image and Runaway Red.That trio all finished fourth in their heat.Wreck Tangles was the quickest third placegetter. The finals will be run on Australia’s richest country raceday of any code, at Bendigo on August 17.Repechages for three-year-olds will be run at Maryborough today.

Terror Time Off Tto North America

10:23 PM 23 Jul 2015 NZST

Smart Queensland pacer Terror Time has been sold and will do his future harness racing in North America.

The former Gr.1 Nursery Pace winner was trained throughout his career by husband and wife combination of Shannon Price and Scott Miller and now heads to stables of leading horseman Darren Cassar, a native of Sydney.

In recent times, Cassar has enjoyed good success with former ‘down under’ pacers including Montana Pablo, Erle Dale, Mr Hasani, Lettucerocku and many others.

Terror Time, a homebred gelded son of Western Terror out of the Camtastic mare Kotare Cameo won 23 of his 73 career starts while banking close to $300,000 in prizemoney.

“Wilson (Terror Time) did a wonderful job for us and he’s a very special horse to the family for a number of reasons.\"

\"The fact we bred him, raced him and claimed a major event in his first season of racing has left us with memories forever.” Shannon Price said.

Terror Time is due to fly to North America on Sunday week (August 2).

From 21 starts this season, Terror Time has won only twice while competing at the highest level.

At his most recent start, Terror Time finished toward the rear of the field behind star four-year-old Bling It On in a mile rate of 1;54.0 at Albion Park on July4

“It’s hard at the elite level and he found it tough going if he didn’t draw well, you’re relying on a fair bit of luck going your way and unfortunately we didn’t get any with him this term.\"

\"Some of his efforts have been really good; he went back to back in April and May and rated good time on both occasions.\"

“My favourite memory of him would easily be the Nursery Pace victory because we didn’t expect to win that night and he fairly and squarely defeated Soho Valencia.\"

\"It was pouring down rain that night and although we had excellent lead-in form, Soho Valencia was expected to win but Wilson charged down the outside to win it.\"

“He’ll do a nice job up there because he’s strong and holds his speed well, he’s always been very well looked after and he hasn’t been overly raced for his age.\"

\"It will be fun to monitor his progress and watch him race via SKY Channel, I just wonder how his best mate Baxter (American Legend) is going to cope without him being around.”

Terror Time was bred and raced by the late Tony Price along with his wife, Katy.

THE BUS COULD CONTEST YOUNG GUNS HEATS IN DECEMBER

Overport Lodge trainer Mark Jones is considering a Young Guns 2YO campaign in Auckland next month for appropriately-named juvenile, The Bus, following his win at the Addington trials on Wednesday, November 2.

The Bus, the nickname of Hurricanes and All Black rugby winger Julian Savea, is a half-brother to the well-performed Overport Lodge pacer Saveapatrol (11 wins from 18 starts for $145,618).

\"The

THE BUS, AND TRAINER MARK JONES, HOLD THE CHALLENGE OF THE ALL STARS TRIO IN A 2YO MOBILE PACE AT THE ADDINGTON TRIALS ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 2.

Both horses are owned by successful stable client Grant Hatton.

Saveapatrol, a former Auckland Cup placegetter, is a gelded son of Christian Cullen, while The Bus is a well-proportioned colt by Art Major.

“We bought this one in Australia from Glenferrie Farm. He was bred in Sydney so he’s eligible for the Breeders Challenge over there next year,” said trainer Mark Jones.

Both are from the big-winning Falcon Seelster mare Rondel Franco (1:51.6), who after winning one of seven NZ 2YO starts, went on to win a further 36 races in the US and Canada, retiring with earnings of the equivalent of $684,003 in stakes.

Rondel Franco, is from Reigning Franco, by Holmes Hanover from the smart 1970s racemare Royal Belmer (12 wins), the latter a winner of the 1973 NZ Standardbred Breeders Stakes and 1972 Kaikoura Cup for the late leading Canterbury trainer, Jack Smolenski.

The family was also in the news last season with another descendant of the Royal Belmer line in Piccadilly Princess taking out the Victorian and North (Island) Oaks, and also the Harness Jewels 3YO Diamond at Cambridge in 1:53, beating out All Stars stablemates, Golden Goddess and Dream About Me.

Piccadilly Princess has won nine of 18 starts for $347,586.

Even though The Bus was 0.9 of a second outside the qualifying time on Wednesday, he won’t have much trouble getting his ticket.

He led up into a stiff easterly breeze on Wednesday and just held by a nose from the Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen-trained filly A Lister (Bettor’s Delight-Legs And Lips filly).

Two other All Stars-trained runners in Funatthebeach (Somebeachsomewhere-Minnie Moose colt) and Motu Rampage (Mach Three-Motu Living Doll colt), also chased The Bus home.

The Bus ran the mobile 2000m in 2:37.1 (2:06.3 mile rate), quickening over his last 800m in 59.8s and final 400m in 28s.

The Young Guns Series Heats begin with a $25,000 heat at Alexandra Park on December 16, with another scheduled on New Year’s Eve, and further heats in February and early March.

The Group One Breckon Bloodstock Young Gun Cardigan Bay Stakes Final to be run at Auckland on March 4.

VALUABLE LIVE OR DIE BROODMARE - BONNIE JOAN
Bonnie Joan will ultimately be a valuable asset as a broodmare, with her dam Wave Runner being a 1:56.3 winning Live Or Die mare from Seamoon, the latter by Smooth Fella from Maureens Dream, by Lordship from Tuapeka Dream. [Cran Dalgety]

BONNIE JOAN FOR AUCKLAND QUEEN OF HEARTS

West Melton trainer Cran Dalgety will be Auckland-bound with speedy pacing mare Bonnie Joan next month after running her rivals ragged in the Listed $40,000 Nevele R Southern Mares Classic at Addington on Friday.

Bonnie Joan will target the Gr. 3 $30,000 Caduceus Club Northern Breeders Stakes on December 8 and the Gr. 1 $100,000 Rosslands Queen Of Hearts on December 15, both run over the mobile 2200m.

Cran, and owners, the Tuapeka Lodge Syndicate, will be hoping for better luck than their first trip north with the speedster when she suffered a minor injury without racing there at two.

Driver Dexter Dunn was taking no chances with Bonnie Joan’s post-race nervous energy on Friday, removing the sulky from her for the presentation.

“She rears up and can throw herself down on the ground. She’s done it three or four times,” Dexter said.

Bonnie Joan, the favourite from the eight gate on Friday, didn’t burn early but rolled evenly to the front with 1200m to run in the 1950m mares sprint.

The daughter of Somebeachsomewhere and Wave Runner had a kick turning for home, coming clear, then holding late closer Opoutama by three-quarters of a length, with Lovetodream (handy outer) and early leader Amazon Lily, next.

Favourite American Tart had a tough trip from the outside gate in Friday’s Classic, racing three wide, then improving outside the leader at the 800m. She battled away in the straight, running fifth.

This was Bonnie Joan’s eighth win, while she’s been second seven times, from just 17 starts, taking her earnings to $134,334.

Bonnie Joan rated 1:55.1 for the mobile 1950m, quickening over her last 800m in 56.5s and final 400m in 27.6s.

Her winning time of 2:19.5 was 1.4 seconds outside the NZ mares mark for the trip, held by Dream About Me.

However, Bonnie Joan, has a 1:52.8 winning mile mark at three and is the holder of two NZ records, set last term.

She won in 2:00.2 (1:53.8, mile rate) over 1700m at Forbury on April 13, and also a NZ 3YO fillies record over 2700m of 3:17.1 (1:57.4, mile rate) when taking out the Gr. 2 $41,400 Southland Oaks at Invercargill on April 30.

Her time for the 2700m is also the NZ allcomers mark for a filly or mare over the distance.

The half-sister to former Kentuckiana Lodge winner Digital Art (1:57), last season’s 1:53.3 miler Break Dance, Tuapeka Sky (1:59.2) and Kilowatt Kid (one win from two starts), continues to fashion a tidy record.

She also ran fourth to Spanish Armada in last term’s Harness Jewels 3YO Emerald, and second in both Addington May Gr. 1 3YO fillies features to the same filly, in the Nevele R Fillies Final and The Breeders New Zealand Oaks.

Bonnie Joan will ultimately be a valuable asset as a broodmare, with her dam Wave Runner being a 1:56.3 winning Live Or Die mare from Seamoon, the latter by Smooth Fella from Maureens Dream, by Lordship from Tuapeka Dream.

Maureens Dream, who won five, was a dashing winner on Show Day at Addington in 1985 for then Kerrytown trainer-driver Richard Brosnan, who let her speed to a big lead then won easing down by four lengths in 1:58.8 rate over 2000m.

She was a half-sister to former top juvenile Tuapeka Knight (1;58.1, 12 wins from 14 starts), and is also the grand-dam through Reality Check of Friday’s Woodlands NZ Free-For-All winner, Ultimate Machete (nine wins from 21 starts for $574,905), who posted a NZ record rate of 1:51.9 for the 1950m.

Maureens Dream is also the grand-dam through Tuapeka Wings of 2012 Northern Derby winner Ideal Scott (1:52.8), a winner of 21 races and $832,804.
